They’ve been in the news, they’ve made news! Grabbing the world’s attention is not an easy task. But some just managed to do that! And that is why they are ‘The Newsmakers of the Year 2011’!
Steve Jobs – Grief took over the world of technology when the iconic technology leader lost his battle against pancreatic cancer on October 5, just a day after the latest upgrade of the iPhone was released. A legend gone – leaving behind a legacy of innovation and invention.
Sachin Tendulkar – Every other match that India played, we just couldn’t care less about whether Sachin would make his 100th century. He is one man who managed to keep the entire nation waiting in every single match. And the wait continues. Hope we find him again among the Newsmakers of 2012, but with the feather of a 100th ton on his hat!!
Dr. Vijay Mallya –The King of Good times has enough moolah to run a cricket team in the IPL, a television show, the Kingfisher Calendar Hunt but just not sufficient to salvage his sinking ship, sorry airline, the Kingfisher Airlines which flew into much turbulent weather during 2011.
Sushil Kumar – A computer operator who won the biggest prize of all – Rs. 5 crores on the quiz show “Kaun Banega Crorepati”, and exemplified how ambition assorted with a pinch of humility can make Lady Luck bless you with the ‘Incredible’.
Cyrus Mistry – who emerged as the most deserving candidate to lead the House of TATA’s. Time will show how well he manages to uphold the legacy of the TATAs.
Politics & Markets
Mamata Banerjee – She inspired awe and admiration when she ousted the Left party’s 34 year regime in Paschim Bangal. Her journey from there was not devoid of ups and downs (as expected, though!) which made her a regular feature on News channels. The feat that consolidated her position as the Newsmaker of 2011 was her opposition against the FDI & the Lokpal Bill which left many in the ruling party asking just one question, “Which side are you, really??”
Pranab Mukherjee – The Finance Minister of the UPA II, also known as the main ‘trouble shooter’ of the Congress Party played a crucial role during the Jan Lokpal Campaign in April & August and also during the winter session of the Parliament when there was stiff opposition over the introduction of FDI in the retail sector. Well, we witnessed how good he was a troubleshooter!!
Dr. Duvvuri Subbarao – The RBI governor, who incessantly increased the repo rates & reverse repo rates to control inflation despite several criticisms & continued his fire fighting to control slowdown surely did make some news.
Sensex – World-wide drama finally had a bearing on the stock markets in India. The BSE Sensex was the worst performing stock market. Weak market sentiment was weighed down by a depreciating rupee, European debt crisis & lack of reforms.
THE REST OF THE WORLD
Angela Merkel & Nicolas Sarkozy : Their ‘Mission Impossible’ – To save the euro zone from falling apart. (It will be fascinating to reading their autobiographies some day!) We pray they make possible the impossible, just so that well being is restored across the globe.
Kate Middleton’s wedding dress – Well, nothing could have matched the excitement that her wedding trousseau generated in 2011. Men and women in India sat glued to their television sets as if it was one of their nieces who was getting married!!
Japan earthquake & tsunami – The deadly earthquake that jolted Japan on March 11 measured a massive 8.9 on Richter scale, and brought more bad news as it was followed by a radioactive leakage at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant. The effect of the jolt was felt worldwide as it caused world leaders to rethink and take measures to ensure security and safety of people around nuclear plants across countries.
Then we had some who ensured they grabbed the limelight by hook or by crook!!! Some chose ‘SCAM’ and others chose ‘SONG’!
A Raja – Former telecom minister was charged for his role in the 2G scam and was lodged in Tihar Jail on February 2, 2011.
Kolaveri Di – Sung by Tamil actor Dhanush, the tune made the entire nation sing along “Why This Kolaveri Kolaveri Kolaveri Di??”. The popularity of this song can be gauged by several spin-offs.
2011 was a year that brought to light great teams and team work!
Team Anna – It was indeed ‘The Team of the Year’, led by anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare and a group of civil society activists campaigning for the Jan Lokpal bill. Never in our lifetime have we seen such a movement. The sea of people on the roads and their non-violent agitation resembled our Freedom Struggle, the way we have seen them in History textbooks.
Team India – Winning the world cup after a hiatus of 28 years was a dream come true and with that they also won our hearts!! But soon a nightmare followed as the team suffered a 4 – 0 whitewash against England.
And finally, if there was a single place that saw a lot of high-profile activity, it was...
The Tihar Jail – From several politicians to members from Corporate India, the jail definitely had a mix of several new inmates. It is said that today the networth of Tihar jail is around 300 crores, enough for it to be listed on BSE!!
